In the early 1900s, Mr. John Schroeder of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, assembled the ranch as a timber plantation. In the 1920s, Milwaukee’s Uihlein family acquired the property and over the years there was an evolution in land use that added cattle ranching, citrus and vegetable farms. Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, Inc. (SMR) is one of southwest Florida’s most successful land management and agri-businesses, continuing the 100-year tradition of delivering a variety of products on the 28,000-acre property in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

 As ranch operations continue to expand, SMR maintains a balance between ranch activities and the natural environment.  Current ranch activities include:

• Cattle. Several thousand head of beef cattle.

• Citrus. Approximately 1,500 acres of citrus groves.

• Vegetables. Growers lease approximately 3,500 acres for farming.

• Timber. Planted timber and untouched natural timber scattered throughout 28,000 acres.

• Turf. Grow and market premium turf varieties on over 1,000 acres. Used for the golf course and athletic club industry, home lawns and other uses.

• Tree Farm. Produces and sells trees for landscape industry.

• Aggregate Mining. Shell mining serves road and other construction purposes, in addition to processing many grades of sands and aggregates. 

• Sarasota Polo Club. Eight fields on 600 acres. The leading club on Florida’s west coast and one of the largest in the country.

• Lakewood Ranch. A 5,500-acre, award-winning, master-planned community. Includes residential development, corporate business parks, recreation, medical, retail and schools.
